Shaykh Muhammad Naveed Jameel was born and raised in Nottingham. The Shaykh began his journey in the study of the Islamic Sciences at the age of 17 at the exemplary institution of Jamia Nizamiyya Ridawiyyah in Pakistan. Here the Shaykh attained his foundations in the Islamic sciences studying the traditional Nizamiyya Syllabus for 4 years under the guidance of eminent scholars such as the erudite Allamah Abdul Hakeem Sharaf al-Qadri, Shaykh al-Hadith Pir Muhammad Chishti, Shaykh al-Hadith Dil Muhammad Chishti, Shaykh al-Hadith Allamah Khadim Hussain Rizvi, and Shaykh al-Hadith Hafiz Abdul Sattar Saeedi. Thereafter, the Shaykh travelled to Syria where he spent a further 5 years studying at the renowned Ma’had al-Fath al-Islami, and studied advanced Aqidah, Fiqh, Usul and much more with the foremost scholars of Damascus such as Shaykh Muhammad Jumu’ah’, Shaykh Dr Saeed Ramadan al-Buti, Shaykh Abd al-Hadi al-Kharsa, Shaykh Fawwaz al-Nimr and Shaykh Osama Rifai. Upon his return to the UK he continued his studies under the tutelage of Mufti Ashfaq Ridawi in Nottingham and began to teach the Islamic sciences.
This course explores the foundational treatise Sharḥ al-Rashīdiyyah, a classic text in the tradition of Islamic argumentation and dialectical ethics. Students will be introduced to the discipline of ādāb al-baḥth wa-al-munāẓarah (the etiquette and art of research and debate), its historical development, and its relevance in both traditional Islamic scholarship and contemporary contexts. Through close reading of the text, participants will learn the rules of debate, the qualities of a competent arguers, the structure of argumentation, and the ethical-spiritual dimensions that accompany it.
